@itsanothertake: Politics, so what even is it anyway? It’s one of those words we hear constantly, on the news, at work, on social media, in conversations with family and friends, but what does it actually mean? Most people who I've asked said that when they hear 'politics', they think of the Prime Minister, parliament, politicians, elections, political parties and people arguing on the television (OR they switch off completely) It does involve all of those things, but politics is much bigger, to all of us, than that To strip it right back, politics is about how decisions are made in society, who gets to make them, what choices are available, and how those choices affect different people. This includes things like: 💷 How much tax we pay 🏥 How healthcare is funded 🏫 How education is organised 🏠 Housing 🚌 Transport 💼 Employment and workers' rights 💰 Benefits and pensions ⚖️ Laws and rights 🏘️ What happens in our local communities And almost straight away is where thing's get complicated, but also where it gets interesting: there usually isn't an unlimited amount of money, time or resources. So politics often involves choices ❓️ What should we prioritise? ❓️ What should government spend money on? ❓️ Who should pay? ❓️ What should the state provide? ❓️ What should individuals be responsible for? And as you can see there isn't always one obvious or easy answer People can look at the same problem, have access to the same information, and genuinely come to completely different conclusions about what should happen next, and that's one reason political literacy and some sort of understanding matters You don't have to know everything about politics You don't even have to have a political label You don't have to agree with a particular party And you definitely don't have to pretend you understand something when you don't But understanding the basics gives you something really important: the ability to make up your own mind Because if we don't understand how decisions are made, it's much harder to work out whether we agree with them So that's what Politics You Get is about, breaking down the stuff that can feel complicated, confusing or full of jargon, without assuming you already know the basics No political qualification required around here 😂 just an interest in learning, understanding and so deciding for yourself. Oh and my take, thoughts and opinions on things now and again too, because I can't stop myself from piping up now I understand things more 🤣 👇🏾 I'm wondering, what's one thing about politics you've always wondered about but never really understood? Drop it down in the comments and then look out for it in a future Politics You Get post #PoliticsYouGet #Politicstiktok #PoliticalLiteracy #PoliticsExplained #LearnPolitics
