@christies_inc: This afternoon, Johnny Marr’s Cherry Red 1960 Gibson ES-355 achieved £204,800 after a spirited round of bidding. Sire Records co-founder Seymour Stein bought the guitar for Marr in New York on 2 January 1984. Marr took it straight back to the Iroquois Hotel and, almost immediately, played what would become ‘Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now’. The next thing he played became ‘Girl Afraid’. The ES-355 became one of the defining instruments of his career — appearing with The Smiths on record, on tour and across numerous television performances. It sold during Marr’s Guitars: The Johnny Marr Auction at Christie’s London.
