Here’s a fascinating fact about Deep Purple’s “Child in Time” that most people don’t know — the song was actually inspired by a Cold War-era protest song by another band. Ian Gillan and Jon Lord have both said it was loosely based on “Bombay Calling” by the San Francisco group It’s a Beautiful Day. Deep Purple heard that song during a rehearsal, loved the eerie repeating riff, and built “Child in Time” around it, turning it into a 10-minute anti-war epic. What’s even wilder: they didn’t realize at first how similar the intro was to “Bombay Calling.” Once they did, they were upfront about it — and later, It’s a Beautiful Day returned the favor by releasing “Don and Dewey,” a song based on Deep Purple’s “Wring That Neck.” Also, Ian Gillan recorded those spine-shattering screams in “Child in Time” in a single take — no overdubs, no edits — and he hit those impossible notes so powerfully that some engineers thought the tape machine had glitched… #deeppurple #70s #music
