Chronic mouth breathing and altered oral function are associated with differences in craniofacial development, dental bite, tongue position and the balance of forces around the mouth and jaw. Research in growing children has found associations with a narrower maxilla, increased vertical facial growth, malocclusion and changes in mandibular position. (PubMed Central (PMC)) And aesthetically, this is why I always assess function when we’re working with the face. Nasolabial folds. Mouth corners. Jawline. Lip posture. Midface. Even what you perceive around the under-eye area can’t always be approached as an isolated skin problem. Your face is adapting to patterns you repeat every single day. For swallowing, I want the tongue doing the work, rather than repeatedly recruiting the lips, chin and cheeks to push the swallow through. I’ll show you exactly what I mean and how to practice the correct swallowing pattern in the tutorial. Save this. Your daily functions matter just as much as your facial massage. 🤍
