@theknottygarden: I’ll be picking raspberries straight from the garden right into October! They are my absolute favorite berry and I’ve been growing them for over a decade. They may seem straightforward, but there’s more to these canes than meets the eye. If you treat them right, they’ll reward you with harvests that stretch from early summer straight into fall. I grow Heritage raspberries, a classic primocane (everbearing) variety that can give you two crops each year...but the secret is in how you prune. How to get two harvests from the same plant: • Late summer to fall: First-year canes (primocanes) fruit at their tips from late August through fall. • After that harvest, don’t cut the canes to the ground. Trim only the top portion that fruited and leave the lower cane standing over winter. • Next early summer: Those same canes, now second-year floricanes, will produce a second crop lower down. • After the early summer harvest, cut those two-year-old canes right to the ground. New primocanes will grow and start the cycle again. 🌱 Planting tips Plant raspberries in early spring as soon as the ground can be worked or in early fall about 4–6 weeks before hard frost so roots can establish before winter. Choose a sunny, well-drained spot, enrich the soil with compost, and space canes about 2 feet apart in rows 4-6 feet apart. Water well after planting and mulch to keep roots cool and moist. 💡 Love Heritage? Other primocane (everbearing) varieties with the same growth habit include Autumn Bliss, Caroline, Polka, and Fall Gold. With this routine you can enjoy homegrown raspberries TWICE every year, and trust me, after a decade of growing, I can tell you the reward is worth it. 👉 Follow me for more edible garden inspiration and year-round harvest tips. 🌸Erin
