@daddylastpromise: They laughed when I walked into the training yard in a faded T-shirt, muddy boots, and a backpack held together by one stubborn strap. One recruit sneered that the Army must be taking “backstage volunteers” now. But when a combat drill tore open the back of my shirt and exposed the tattoo between my shoulder blades, the veteran colonel watching from the sideline went rigid—and saluted me. My name is Olivia Mitchell. Most of them assumed I didn’t belong at Fort Bragg the second they saw me arrive in an old pickup with chipped paint and mud caked around the tires. That was fine with me. Nobody needed to know I came from one of the wealthiest families in the country. I had grown up around private tutors, gated estates, and people who measured status by the car in your driveway. I left all of that behind. At the training yard, I wore plain clothes, no jewelry, no makeup, and boots old enough to embarrass anyone who cared about appearances. Captain Daniel Harrow noticed me immediately. He was built like a concrete wall and had a voice that could shut down an entire formation. “You!” he barked. “Supply crew get lost?” The recruits laughed. A blonde cadet named Tara leaned toward the girl beside her. “Probably here to fill a quota.” I looked straight at Harrow. “I’m a cadet, sir.” He snorted. “Then get in line. Don’t slow us down.” By lunch, the jokes had gotten uglier. I carried my tray to a quiet corner when Derek, a lean recruit with a buzz cut and too much confidence, dropped into the seat across from me. “Yo, lost girl,” he said loudly. “This isn’t a soup kitchen.” His friends laughed. “You sure you’re not supposed to be washing dishes?” I kept eating. That annoyed him. He flicked the edge of my tray, sending mashed potatoes across my shirt. The whole table erupted. I wiped the mess away with a napkin and took another bite. I gave him nothing. During morning conditioning, my old bootlaces came loose during a sprint. Lance—the golden boy of the group—jogged up beside me. “Hey, thrift store,” he called. “Your shoes quitting before you do?” More laughter. I stopped, tied them quickly, and stood. That was when Lance slammed his shoulder into mine. I hit the mud on both hands. “You training to clean floors, Mitchell?” he said. “Or are you just here to be our punching bag?” I rose without answering and kept running. Silence bothered them more than anger ever could. Later, Tara cornered me during a break. “So where are you even from?” she asked. “Did you win some contest to get here?” “I applied.” She rolled her eyes. “Why? You don’t exactly scream elite soldier.” I looked at her muddy boots, then back at her face. “I’m here to train,” I said. “Not to make you feel better about yourself.” Her smile disappeared. The navigation exercise began that afternoon. We were sent across a wooded ridge with maps, compasses, and a hard deadline. I moved alone. Quietly. Precisely. Near a stand of pines, a recruit named Kyle saw me checking my map. “Hey, Dora the Explorer!” he shouted. “You lost already?” His group laughed as they surrounded me. I folded the map. Kyle stepped closer and snatched it from my hand. That was when I finally looked at him differently. He must have seen something in my eyes, because his grin faltered. But it wasn’t Kyle who exposed me. That happened later, during a hand-to-hand combat drill. One recruit grabbed my collar from behind, yanked hard, and tore my shirt down the back. “Girls like you are only good at hiding!” he shouted. The fabric ripped. Cold air hit my skin. Then the entire training yard went silent. Behind me, someone sucked in a breath. I turned. Colonel Raymond Cole, a thirty-year Army veteran, was staring directly at the tattoo across my upper back. His face drained of color. Slowly, he stepped forward. Then he snapped to attention. And saluted me. Every recruit froze. Because that tattoo was not decoration. It was the covert insignia of Ghost Viper. And suddenly, everyone who had spent the day laughing at
