It is not a contradiction. He is the representation of the word "rationality". Which comes from Greek's "Ratio". The concept had no difference between logic and emotion. It was later made through a misapprehension of rationality in philosophy. He is the TRUE ratio

You're right about a lot of it, but Ratio is way cooler at what he does. 1 He can connect with anyone. Take weird, restless Stella: he doesn't look down on her despite her lack of education, and he knows all her good qualities. Or Aventurine, who so far has no other known close person besides Ratio, and whose suicidal intent Ratio read instantly even though Aventurine never dropped a hint. You can tell from how surprised he was by the note. 2 He isn't biased even against irritating, arrogant people, and he sees straight through to what they actually are (Gilgamesh). 3 He even found common ground with Herta, since she did make him a statue. 4 He's more brutal with his words toward Aventurine than with anyone else, probably because Aventurine is far more comfortable when every grievance, even a petty one, gets said to his face immediately. 5 Ratio travels the universe constantly and pushes huge numbers of people to grow, each with a method tailored to them. With Asta you have to be harsh, or you'll never get her to make safety her top priority. And for Ratio the university is, on principle, a place where only those who are ready to learn will graduate, and he won't drag anyone through it

Idk if this is canon, but I always assumed that him calling himself mediocre is the reason for his being a teacher. It’s kind of another way of saying that hes just like everyone else, which means that by extension everyone else is like him, so if he was able to achieve all that he did, everyone else also possesses the inherent ability to do the same, upon guidance.

Also idk if it's canon but I read somewhere that the reason Ratio wasn't chosen by Nous to be part of his path was because he was too emotional and this could be an obstacle to his rationality or to reach true knowledge qwq
