@historybyhumans: Alix Schoelcher Idrache immigrated to the United States from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 2009, arriving with only a basic grasp of English and little formal education. He became a U.S. citizen and served two years with the Maryland Army National Guard before earning admission to the United States Military Academy at West Point.   On May 21, 2016, he graduated near the top of his class, an achievement captured in a widely shared photograph showing tears streaming down his face during the ceremony. In a social media post afterward, Idrache wrote that he had never imagined such an honor would be bestowed on someone from Haiti, reflecting on the legacy of those who had graduated before him.   He told an Army reporter that in Haiti, "people don't grow up to be pilots," and that when choosing his career path, he specifically selected aviation because it represented something he could never have pursued at home.   Idrache went on to attend the Aviation Center of Excellence at Fort Rucker, Alabama, and became a U.S. Army Blackhawk pilot. He has credited his success to his father, who immigrated to the United States first and worked to save enough money to bring the rest of the family over.
