“Friend” is one of the most misunderstood words in life. From childhood, we’re often taught to use it far too loosely. We go to school together, work together, train together, hang out, or follow each other online and quickly call each other friends. But knowing someone and being friendly with someone doesn’t automatically make them a friend. Real friendship develops and is earned over time. Time reveals character. Situations reveal loyalty. Adversity reveals intentions. Consistency reveals who someone really is. There’s no universal timeline. Some friendships develop quickly because of circumstances, while others take years. The problem comes when we give someone the title of “friend” too quickly and immediately expect the loyalty, honesty, and support of a true friendship. Sometimes they didn’t betray a friendship. We expected friendship from someone who was still an acquaintance. That doesn’t make them a bad person. It means it’s our responsibility to understand the different levels of relationships and manage our expectations accordingly.
