Basically, you can take it to a bank and exchange it for 10 £1 coins. The value used to be in the coins due to them being made of a precious metal, pieces of silver etc. although nowadays there isn’t really any value in the metal the coins are made from.

We just keep passing the I.o.u there is now no final cash in value … technically you could in past go to Bank of England and cash that note for a valued commodity ( gold / silver etc ) guess what ??? You can’t anymore
