This is not dominant behavior. This is defensive behavior. When you look at behavior like this, and your first thought is that maybe the dog needs to be punished or put in his place I would argue that what if you were provoked to a point where you felt that you needed to defend yourself offensively? What if you felt threatened enough that you believed the only option was for you to take offensive action? Now this doesn’t mean that we should allow behavior like this to continue, NOT AT ALL. But it does mean that we need to make sure that we are not unknowingly or knowingly, provoking a dog to respond in this way, only to confirm to them through strong forms of emotionally charged punishment/retaliation that they do in fact, need to defend themselves. The real question is what is happening that would make the dog feel that this is the best way to handle this situation? Finding out and assessing the reason why the dog felt to be defensive in the first place is step one.
