I would never scream at a student, but I can’t promise I won’t lose my train of thought and blank stare for 20 seconds if a student is doing something distracting.

A prof once gave us a practice problem to work on in groups. 5 min later, he called everyone back to discuss our answers. One group was still whispering among themselves, trying to finish the problem. He got annoyed and told them to leave. This one girl refused, apologizing and saying she didn’t mean to be disrespectful. He didn’t care and insisted she leave before he called security. She still refused, arguing that she had apologized, was actively participating, and was paying for the class. He reached for the phone to call security, but then without saying anything, put it back down and resumed the lecture. Idk if he had been bluffing or what. He definitely held a grudge tho. For the rest of the semester, he almost always called on her to answer questions as some kind of power move to embarrass her when she didn’t know the answer or as a “Since you wanna participate so badly” type of thing. “Coincidentally”, that same semester, he made everyone take the final that was previously optional bc he claimed he had evidence of students cheating on the weekly quizzes. Mind you, his behavior ended up being way more disruptive than anything that girl could’ve possibly done.

I've been in a lot of college classrooms, and I never saw egregious student behavior that would make a teacher yell, let alone walk out on a class.

Even as a grad student I had a prof react similarly a couple years ago over me not completing a test fast enough after they didn't give me my university approved exam accommodations. people really need to stop teaching when they reach that level of burnout and emotional volatility.

My chair literally screamed at me in front of a student, who I then had to talk to normally for 30 min as if nothing had happened. There is no building back trust after that.

One of my classmates was kicked out of diff eq because they were eating Doritos. The bag and the crunching was too loud. The professor kept teaching diff eq until he died a few years later

Omg u cuss😂?? Def a good insight tho. Professors should be cognizant of the power dynamics between them and students and try to model good character. U actually remind me of one of my professors from undergrad.

oh my…retaliation in higher ed is so bad. i’ve heard horror stories about retaliation from directors, area coordinators, vps, etc! being at a small liberal arts college made it totally worse because everyone graduated with each other and now run the school. 80% of the staff were alumni and that could have been a good thing because they understand but i think it prevented them from experiencing life. having “outside” (non-alumni) staff/faculty was so rare.

I had a professor where a students phone buzzed (not ring) twice and she said “oh was that your phone that buzzed” and he said “yeah sorry I thought it was on silent” and she said “oh if someone’s calling you it must be important so you can get your stuff and get out of my class” 😭😭😭
