The real announcement is narrower, and more useful. What Ripple shipped: on September 17 RippleX released version 1.1 of the XRP Ledger AI Starter Kit. It now supports the Machine Payments Protocol, an open standard co-written by Stripe and Tempo, plus the Open Wallet Standard, on top of x402, which was added in June. Developers building on that standard can offer XRP and Ripple's stablecoin RLUSD as a payment option. Read it precisely: Stripe itself does not accept XRP, the XRPL now speaks the standard Stripe helped write. AI agents can use it to pay for data, compute and online services, one off or in ongoing sessions, with spending limits and without touching a private key. Why Stripe is the anchor: according to Datanyze, Stripe runs on about 22 percent of websites with payment processing, roughly 1.14 million active sites, and handled 1.9 trillion dollars in payment volume in 2025. Other trackers count smaller shares depending on the category. The market behind it: McKinsey projects agentic commerce, purchases that AI agents complete on behalf of people, at 3 to 5 trillion dollars globally by 2030, with up to 1 trillion in the US. Bain is far more cautious at up to 500 billion. Neither study says how much of that will move over crypto rails. And the price: XRP trades near 1.30 dollars, 64 percent below its all time high of 3.65 dollars from July 2025, with a market cap around 82 billion dollars. It dropped about 10 percent after the Clarity Act vote on September 15, is up 31 percent over 30 days and down 57 percent over one year. Whether agent payments ever reach the price depends on XRP being the asset that actually moves, or RLUSD doing the work.
