This is going to be long- hear me out. You have a great point however On a deeper level what outside observers (YT ppl) often misunderstand about hood culture is that it is not a set of superficial lifestyle choices, aesthetic preferences, or "bad decisions." It is a deeply entrenched survival architecture designed to navigate multi generational, structural abandonment. When you are born into or trapped in this environment, "just pulling away" isn't a matter of willpower; it requires dismantling your entire framework for safety, identity, and economic survival. When the state does not guarantee your safety, the community must create its own governance. What YT ppl judge as "street codes" (like the rules against talking to law enforcement) are actually informal legal systems. In a vacuum of institutional protection, safety is maintained through a collective code of conduct and local accountability. Leaving that code behind means stripping yourself of your only protection. In the regular world, career mobility relies on resumes, degrees, and professional networks. ..In the hood, survival relies on social capital built through loyalty, presence, and reputation. If you cannot get a bank loan, your safety net is the neighbor who watches your kids or the person who lends you $50 for groceries. If you decide to "pull away" to pursue a mainstream path, you are often forced to sever these ties. To the community, leaving can look like a rejection or a betrayal of the collective survival pact. If your mainstream gamble fails, you could return to find your local social safety net entirely gone. Living in an environment with constant undercurrents of volatility, financial scarcity, and physical danger keeps the nervous system in a state of chronic hypervigilance (trauma response). Neurologically, when the brain is locked in survival mode, it prioritizes immediate, short term outcomes over long term planning. Asking someone in this environment to "just go to college" or "save for a down payment" is asking them to invest in a distant, hypothetical future while their immediate environment requires 100% of their cognitive energy just to make it through the week safely.
