Haiti defeated slavery. Haiti became the first Black republic. Haiti proved Black people could defeat empire and govern themselves. That terrified slaveholding America so much that the United States refused to formally recognize Haiti for decades. Haiti also invited free Black Americans to migrate there in the 1820s with promises of land, opportunity, and life in a Black state. So no, we do not need fake receipts. The real receipts are already damning. France forced Haiti to pay former slaveholders for their so-called losses. America participated in this enforcement. That debt robbed Haiti for generations. In 1914, U.S. Marines removed $500,000 in gold from Haiti’s National Bank and sent it to New York. Haiti was punished for freedom and then blamed for the poverty that punishment helped create. So before people call Haitians disposable, illegal, or a burden, they need to learn the history empires tried to hide. Because the story of Haiti is not failure. It is punishment for freedom.
