@goodranchers: Why is everyone talking about horse meat? The New York Times ran a story about hundreds of wild horses apparently being sold to kill buyers and slaughterhouses. The Bureau of Land Management, which manages those horses, denies selling directly to either one. A horse has to go up for adoption three times and go unadopted each time before it can be sold. Sales are up, but not up enough to say a ton of these horses are headed to slaughter. It's not without precedent that people worry about horse meat in their food. In 2013, Aldi had to recall beef products that were up to 100% horse meat. That scandal is years in the past and it isn't happening now, but it shows what happens when food safety breaks down. People start asking questions, and there's good merit to wondering what's on our grocery store shelves. Lately it feels like there's a new food safety issue or import error every single week. None of these questions are out of left field. Scrutinize everything. Ask where your food is coming from. Ask what's happening with sourcing.
