I also live in a manufactured home community, and my experience has been very different. For my husband and me, buying our manufactured home has honestly been one of the best decisions we’ve made. We grew up here in the Bay Area, our children and family are here, and this is where we want to live.
The reality is that we simply could not afford a traditional home here with an enormous down payment, enormous mortgage payment, and property taxes. And renting isn’t exactly affordable either. A two-bedroom apartment in the Bay Area can cost thousands of dollars a month, often without a garage or much outdoor space. You can pay rent year after year and, when you leave, you don’t have a home to sell.
Yes, we pay space rent, but we do not have an HOA. We own our manufactured home, we have our own space, and we absolutely love our community.
And if the day comes when we decide to move, we can put our manufactured home up for sale. After any loan balance and selling costs are paid, whatever equity we have belongs to us. To me, that’s a nest egg—something of value that we can take with us rather than having spent all those years paying rent with no home to sell at the end.
For us, our manufactured home has allowed us to stay right here in the Bay Area, close to our children, grandchildren and family, without taking on a mortgage that would financially overwhelm us. I’m extremely grateful for our home and wouldn’t trade it.
