Following a massive $24.6 million preservation effort, the building operates today as a community anchor providing 51 units of affordable housing alongside ground-floor community assets like a Mariachi Cultural Center and rehearsal rooms for local musicians.The building is a rare, spectacular example of 1889 Queen Anne Victorian and Romanesque Revival architecture, making it one of the oldest surviving commercial structures in the entire city. Designed by famed architect W.R. Norton for community pioneers George Cummings and Maria del Sacramento Lopez, the building's defining feature is its dramatic four-story corner turret (cupola) topped with a conical cap, which has served as a visual beacon for East LA for over a century. Its historic exterior boasts intricate decorative brickwork, cast-iron storefront columns, and an original bronze sign reading "Cummings Block".
