There is an Igbo saying: “E gbuo dike n’ogu uno, e ruo n’ogu agu e lote ya.” (Kill a warrior during the fight at home, and you will remember him when the real enemy comes.) It is a painful piece of wisdom. Sometimes, the people fighting each other know one another too well. They know the failures, weaknesses, mistakes and secrets that could have been used to protect the house. Instead, they turn them into weapons. That is what Aghadinuno captures that there is war in the house. And the danger is not simply the quarrel itself. It is what happens when winning the fight becomes more important than protecting the house. A brother begins trying to bring down a brother. Business partners who once built together start working against each other. Friends who once lifted one another begin looking for ways to make the other fall. Everyone is fighting. Then, sometimes, the person you spent years pulling down is the very person you wish was still standing beside you. Perhaps that is why our ancestors warned against ogu uno. Not because disagreement should never happen. But because some battles are won by destroying the very people you may one day need.
