@california.history: 🌊🪶 Today it's surf breaks, beaches, restaurants, and one of California's most photographed stretches of coastline. But the postcard begins thousands of years too late. Long before ranches, highways, and weekend getaways, Indigenous communities lived throughout the San Mateo coast. Nearby were communities including the Quiroste, part of the extraordinarily diverse Native world historians commonly group under the broader name Ohlone. They fished, hunted, gathered plants and shellfish, traded with neighboring communities, and maintained villages and relationships with this landscape generations before Europeans arrived. Then Spanish colonization transformed the coast. Native people throughout the region were drawn into the mission system, where disease, labor demands, religious conversion, restrictions on movement, and disruption of traditional life devastated communities. Their homelands were eventually absorbed into missions, ranchos, private property, towns, and development. But Indigenous history did not disappear when the maps changed. 🌊 Tourists call this coastline paradise. For generations before California existed, Native people simply called this region home.
