![Doug Jones said that if elected governor, he wants to send more support to Alabama law enforcement to tackle violent crime. He also said he is “just the opposite of defund the police.” “I want to give them more resources,” he said. “I want to get them more training.” In comments in Birmingham Sept. 15, he noted recent shootings and homicides across the state, but called them “isolated incidents.” Jones said local law enforcement need help, but he believes strategies for tackling crime should be decided by local residents. He also cited work when he was a U.S. Attorney of getting illegal guns of the streets. “Overall, violent crime in the state of Alabama is on its way down, and the local mayors, Mayor Woodfin [in Birmingham], has done a wonderful job with his police chief of bringing violent crime down, because they put the resources in place,” he said. Tuberville has said that if he is elected, he could send in the National Guard to Montgomery and Birmingham to address crime.
