Why not have them invested $600 a month in a Roth IRA account. In 5 years they should have close to 43k to use towards buying a home if they want. That is a great way to teach them financial independence and success.

I have two adult children living with us at home. They both pay $700 and they are responsible for electricity and internet since they stay up till whatever time they choose. They also pay for their vehicles, insurance and phone bills. Only one of them has a car payment because he bought his first car all on his own. The beautiful thing about this we get to hang out with our adult kids and they love it and us enjoy it more.

I charged my son $300/mnth. But he needed to start saving for a place of his own. After 8mnths,he saved enough for a down payment for his own 3bdrm townhouse. After he took possession, I gave all his rent money back, so he could furnish his first home.

I did the same charged him $800 including food, internet, phone and utilities. he got rides to work from us and had warm food. well he got mad and moved out, now he has to work 2 jobs and is still broke.

I took it a step further. I charge them monthly but put it away and when they do move out they will have a savings to move out with. they also have to take the portion of their check and save it on their own.

So my kids moved out 2 years ago average cost of living was around 3000. Lost their jobs moved back with us, had a lease that we had to continue to pay around 2000 for about 4 months! Guess what I’m collecting money from them because they had no problem giving a stranger rent!
