@michael.1207: What comes into a person from the outside cannot defile them, because it does not enter their heart but goes into their stomach and is expelled. Jesus is declaring that food itself does not make a person spiritually unclean. What comes out of a person is what defiles them. What we say and what we do can reveal what is in our hearts. Jesus explains that from the heart come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, murder, theft, false witness, slander, pride, foolishness, and other evil things. All of these evil things come from within a person’s heart. This is why Jesus is after our hearts and not just religious behavior. God doesn’t want us to simply appear righteous on the outside while our hearts remain unchanged. He wants to transform us from the inside out.
