I love in sweden and many expiration dates has a little text beside it that say "often good after" so that people use their own judgement and senses to determine.

Companies are ✨heavy✨ on avoiding lawsuits & recalls. They’d rather you throw it away and buy it again than allow you to use it to it near the ACTUAL unsafe date.

I wish they would have a standard location on the item so that you don’t have to search the whole can/jar/bag to find the printed date! I don’t want to have a scavenger hunt every time I clean out the pantry!

In Norway alot of products use the label "Best before, often good after" in an attempt to reduce food waste, and encouraging people to use there senses to check whether food has gone bad

Generally I go with the rule of add 50% of the time between when you get the food and the date on the package. If it expires in 6 months, it's probably good for an extra three. If it expires in a week, another three days probably doesn't hurt. BUT if it starts to mold or smell bad or whatever then it's bad and throw it out immediately
