“Not afraid of me?” I looked at him, then at the gun. “Would being afraid get me released?” He smiled. I wasn't being clever. I wanted an answer from a man who treated kidnapping like a social occasion. I was Ruby Ellis, twenty-three. Imogen had invited me on vacation. Her family had practically become mine, and I wanted a break from being the friend with problems. I even tolerated Delaney and Skye's remarks about my weight. At a gas station, two men watched me. One was armed. Skye turned my warning into a joke. Later, masked men waved us toward a police pickup. I recognized the other stranger's glasses in a nearby truck. “Imogen, keep going.” Delaney insisted we stop. They took our phones, claimed to smell drugs, and pulled us out at gunpoint. I split my forehead on their truck's doorframe before they hooded me. In the basement, I said the masks probably meant ransom. Everyone named someone who could pay. I had a dead father and a mother who sometimes forgot me. “What happens if nobody can pay?” The man paused, then promised a solution. They removed my hood to film a plea. Delaney and Skye ran before I finished, still bound and blindfolded. One tripped over Imogen. The other hit a door. The commotion brought their boss downstairs without a mask. He stared at me. I could almost hear my reassuring speech about hidden faces being torn up. After scolding his men, he asked if I was okay. “I've had better mornings.” He made a joke about my injury. “You must be exhausting at parties.” He laughed. That brought us to his question about fear. After my answer, he asked my name and laid the pistol across his lap. I could identify him. His arrest would jeopardize everyone relying on his operation. Apparently, killing me was a community service. “You should put that on a brochure.” Imogen cried. He asked whose fault this was, looking toward Delaney and Skye. I gave him their names. No victory. Just another silence. He spoke to his men, returned, and kept tipping his head. Finally, he positioned mine to the right himself. I straightened. He made me tilt it again. I was almost offended by the effort he expected me to put into my own execution. He apologized. The gun went off. I fell. Imogen screamed. Men dragged me upstairs, and the steps hurt. Having another hood put on also seemed unnecessary for a corpse. “Hang on. Am I dead?” The guard told me to shut up. “I'm taking that as a no.” He threatened to kill me if I didn't stop moving. I found the motivation to cooperate. They untied me in a bedroom and locked the door. Under the shower, the jokes stopped. Imogen thought I was dead. If she got home, she'd tell everyone. The boss entered while I was tying a robe. “Am I welcome?” “You have the key. Does it matter?” He promised not to hurt me again. I retreated to the bed. “Why'd you let me live?” He began explaining his shooting skills. “Not what I asked.” “It didn't seem fair.” “Killing me?” He shrugged. I could handle insults. Being kept alive because somebody found me pathetic was harder. “Great. I'm a pity project.” He held my gaze. “Or maybe you caught my eye.” For once, I had no comeback.
