Vietnam has a long and complex history shaped by ancient kingdoms, foreign domination, independence movements, dynastic rule, colonialism, and modern wars. The history of Vietnam began thousands of years ago with early agricultural societies in the Red River Delta. One of the earliest known cultures was the Đông Sơn culture, famous for its sophisticated bronze drums and farming communities. Ancient Vietnamese traditions later developed into the kingdoms of Văn Lang and Âu Lạc. In the second century BCE, the region came under Chinese control, beginning a period of Chinese domination that lasted, with interruptions, for many centuries. Vietnamese resistance to Chinese rule became an important part of national history. In 40 CE, the Trưng Sisters led a major uprising against Han Chinese rule. Although their rebellion was eventually defeated, they became enduring symbols of Vietnamese independence. In 938, Ngô Quyền defeated the Southern Han forces at the Battle of Bạch Đằng River. This victory marked the beginning of a long period of independent Vietnamese states. After independence, several dynasties ruled Vietnam. The Lý dynasty established a strong centralized government and moved the capital to Thăng Long, modern Hanoi. The Trần dynasty successfully resisted three major Mongol invasions in the 13th century, particularly under commanders such as Trần Hưng Đạo. The Lê dynasty later expanded and strengthened the Vietnamese state. During the reign of Lê Thánh Tông in the 15th century, Vietnam developed a powerful bureaucracy and expanded southward. From the 16th to the 18th centuries, Vietnam experienced political division and civil conflicts. The country was divided for long periods between rival political powers, including the Trịnh lords in the north and the Nguyễn lords in the south. In the late 18th century, the Tây Sơn movement emerged and defeated several rival forces. Nguyễn Huệ, later known as Emperor Quang Trung, became one of the movement's most famous leaders. In 1789, his forces defeated a large Qing army near Thăng Long. In 1802, Nguyễn Ánh established the Nguyễn dynasty and became Emperor Gia Long. The dynasty ruled Vietnam until the 19th century, when French expansion transformed the country. France gradually conquered Vietnam and incorporated it into French Indochina. Vietnamese resistance continued through many movements and political organizations. During the 20th century, Hồ Chí Minh became a central figure in the struggle for Vietnamese independence. In 1945, following Japan's surrender in World War II, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was proclaimed. The First Indochina War followed, ending with the French defeat at Điện Biên Phủ in 1954. Vietnam was then temporarily divided into North and South. The Vietnam War, known in Vietnam as the Resistance War Against the United States, continued until 1975. North Vietnamese forces and their allies eventually defeated South Vietnam. On April 30, 1975, Saigon fell, marking the end of the war. In 1976, Vietnam was formally reunified as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Since the late 20th century, Vietnam has undergone major economic and social changes. The Đổi Mới reforms, launched in 1986, introduced market-oriented economic policies while maintaining a socialist political system. Vietnam has since become increasingly integrated into the global economy. Today, its history remains a major source of national identity, shaped by thousands of years of cultural development, resistance, political change, and interaction with neighboring and foreign powers.#Trending#viral#edit#vietnam#ftypシ
