When I was growing up in the 80s, Dolly Parton was not exactly considered a role model for women. She was in fact the caricature of a “dumb blonde”. A bimbo. But she was in on the joke because she knew she wasn’t dumb and she wasn’t even a blonde! (Her words) She wasn’t looking for validation from anyone. When she died today at the age of 80, she was unquestionably a role model, in every possible way that matters: 💋 After meeting her husband Carl at the age of 18, she stayed married for 60 years. She called her husband her soulmate, and they overcame huge obstacles together, including infertility, her incredible fame, and his avoidance of the limelight. 💋She embraced a love of all people, no matter what their background, race, ethnicity or sexuality. She simply loved people and they loved her. 💋 I read somewhere that she donated over 300 million books to help children overcome illiteracy. Her own father could not read or write. She was born into poverty. 💋 And she decided many years ago that she would not die a billionaire. She gave away as much money she could to people in need. 💋She was feminine and blatantly female in the most unapologetic way, and she never let her age or sex appeal detract from her confidence, strength and power. She did not make herself smaller to be taken seriously. Instead, she went bigger and bolder, with rhinestones head to toe. I was most inspired by her spiritual values and beliefs: tolerant of differences, unifying and generous to the poor and vulnerable. Needless to say, I absolutely loved her music and it will live on forever in our memory. This so called bimbo was the epitome of a leader, in spite of (or perhaps because of) her appearance. Human beings come in all colors shapes and sizes. Dolly Parton showed us that there is no limit to success when it’s done with love in your heart, hard work and a big (ahem) smile. #WomenLeaders. #DollyParton. #Feminist. #Patriarchy. #WomenInBusiness.
