They Worshipped Him as God... He Was Buried Under a Toilet. Haile Selassie – Emperor of Ethiopia (1892 – 1975) Tafari Makonnen, better known in history as Haile Selassie I, was the Emperor of Ethiopia from 1930 to 1974. 👑 His reign began with reform and international respect, but ended in famine, betrayal, and a body hidden beneath his own palace. 😨 Born on July 23, 1892, near Harar, Ethiopia, he was the son of Ras Makonnen, a general and close relative of Emperor Menelik II. 🏛️ Though he had no direct path to the throne, he rose from provincial governor to Regent of Ethiopia, and finally to Emperor in 1930. 📜 He took the name Haile Selassie — "Might of the Trinity" — along with the ancient title King of Kings, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah. 🦁 He modernized Ethiopia with its first constitution, new schools and hospitals, and closer ties to the international community. 📚 In 1935, Fascist Italy invaded with tanks, aircraft, and poison gas, forcing him into exile the following year. ✈️ In 1936, he stood before the League of Nations in Geneva and warned that failing to stop aggression in Ethiopia would only invite it elsewhere in the world. 🌍 He returned to Addis Ababa in 1941 and later helped found the Organization of African Unity, becoming a global symbol of African independence. 🤝 To followers of the Rastafari movement in Jamaica, he was revered as the returned Messiah — a living God. 🙏 But in the early 1970s, famine spread through Wollo province while his government concealed its scale from the world. 🌾 In September 1974, his own military turned against him, and a junta known as the Derg removed him from power. ⚔️ He died in custody less than a year later; officials cited natural causes, but evidence later suggested he was strangled on the new regime's orders. ⚠️ For seventeen years, his remains lay hidden beneath a palace toilet — undiscovered until 1992. 🕯️ #haileselassie #ethiopia #kingofkings #rastafarian #History
