Resting 30–60 seconds between every set doesn’t automatically make your workout better. If your goal is building muscle, rushing your rest can actually make your next set worse. Here’s why: 1️⃣ Your muscles need time to recover If you start the next set while you’re still exhausted, you’ll usually get fewer quality reps and use less weight. 2️⃣ Being out of breath isn’t the goal Lifting doesn’t need to feel like cardio to build muscle. Your goal is to challenge the target muscle—not just keep your heart rate high. 3️⃣ Big exercises usually need more rest Squats, presses, rows, RDLs, and other demanding movements may need around 2–3+ minutes between hard sets so you can perform well again. 4️⃣ Smaller exercises may need less Lateral raises, curls, pushdowns, and similar isolation movements often require less recovery. You might be ready again after roughly 1–2 minutes. 5️⃣ Performance should decide your rest If you got 10 reps on set one and only 5 on set two because you rushed your rest, waiting another minute probably would’ve made that second set more productive. 6️⃣ Longer rest doesn’t mean you’re lazy Standing around for another minute can actually let you train HARDER when the next set starts. 7️⃣ Don’t rest forever either You don’t need 10 minutes between every set. Rest long enough that your breathing is controlled and you feel capable of producing another high-quality set. Simple rule: Heavy compound → usually 2–3+ min Isolation → usually 1–2+ min Still exhausted? → wait longer Stop judging workout intensity by how fast you move between exercises. A productive workout is about quality sets, progression, and actually challenging the muscle. Save this and try giving yourself more rest on your next hard workout.
