@headhunt.her: I’m a firm believer in being respectful, but honesty and candidness deserves a place in conversation. Otherwise, how do we get better or get ahead? #corporate #corporatelife #9to5 #corporateamerica #corporatetiktok
it’s so frustrating because we’re wasting time lmao

I work with mostly men and if they do it, it’s not viewed that way. But when I do…I’m considered abrasive.

I understand your directness but you have to take emotions into account - not just logic. Someone could be feeling imposter syndrome, someone may have just gotten bad feedback, someone may not have the level of confidence that you have. Regardless, you have to speak in a way that acknowledges someone’s intentions behind an idea even if you disagree with it. Some people grew up with serious abuse at home, may struggle with perfectionism, and comments like that cut right to the core. It’s not about directness and passive aggressiveness. It’s about empathy and recognizing that people may feel things differently than you do. An effective communicator can disagree and do it while paying attention to someone’s emotions. I have someone like you on my team who is very passionate, but she devalues people without realizing it when she disagrees with them. Always lead with appreciation and empathy.

Being passive aggressive is entirely about power and domination, you want the power to insult or control others but remain plausible deniability when feelings are hurt…it’s a method of manipulation and you’re not weird for not wanting to play those games.

Love this take. Honest and direct IS being respectful. I don’t want to waste my time going down the wrong path.

Your boss was right saying that’s a bad idea is not a good approach it’s discouraging to that person to speak up again

I was told that I'm too direct as well (multiple times) and my manager's advice was 'praise in public, criticize in private; any issues or disagreements are not to be discussed in front of others as it comes across as demeaning and insulting and you look like the villain'. I'm still struggling btw 😭☠️

The whole corporate speak is counterproductive and I can’t stand it. I can do it but it’s just not for me.

I was told I need to fix my “natural resting face” as it’s not always “warm and welcoming” in a review once.

It make sense what your manager said to you, the way you said it make it sound like your calling them dumb for their proposal

And even more frustrating is that your boss could’ve easily given you that feedback at that time so you could learn and improve instead of waiting until there’s promotion talks and use it against you as a reason not to. By the time the review came you could’ve already fixed that “problem”

Corporate jargon is the reason why our meetings last way longer and waste more time that it should 😭 I’d rather be direct but that’s also why my previous manager said he couldn’t promote me lol. I just went with a new company that loves the directness 😂😂

It sounds to me like constantly shutting down something before sitting with it. I also think people have bad ideas sometimes, but if you don’t shut it down right away and ask questions, sometimes it can lead to a good idea. It’s not so much what you’re saying, it sounds more like it’s this ending of the conversation/cutting off exploration because you don’t agree

if you told me one of my ideas wouldn't be good, I would either A. respond to the constructive criticism or B. think about it, restructure the idea OR C. let it go if it really is a bad idea.
constructive criticism is the way we GROW. I love direct people, they tell u exactly what's up.
