@witholaf: On October 11, 2018, 23-year-old Fiona Simpson was driving from Nanango to Kingaroy on the D'Aguilar Highway in Queensland, Australia. Her 78-year-old grandmother and her 4-month-old daughter, Clara, were also in the car. During the drive, a powerful supercell storm suddenly hit the area. The storm produced hailstones that were about the size of tennis balls. The large pieces of hail smashed through the car’s windows, putting everyone inside in risk. As the windows shattered, Simpson quickly moved into the back of the car to protect her baby. She used her own body as a shield, covering Clara and taking the impact herself. Simpson suffered severe bruising to her back, arms, and head during the storm. Her injuries were serious, but she continued to protect her young daughter. Her 78-year-old grandmother was also badly hurt. The hail caused the skin on her arm to be shredded, and she needed to be taken to the hospital for treatment. The frightening experience later gained attention because of Simpson’s actions to protect her baby. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk nominated Simpson for a bravery award in recognition of what she did during the storm. Interestingly, Simpson said she did not even know about the nomination at first. She only learned about it after being contacted by her local newspaper. #HeroMom #BraveryAward #Motherhood #TrueStory #Queensland
