Most people think Luke 15 is about... a rebellious son who came back to God. But that's only half the story. Jesus actually tells us about two lost sons. One was lost in rebellion. The other was lost in religion. The younger son said, "Give me my inheritance." (Luke 15:12) HE WANTED THE FATHER'S BLESSINGS WITHOUT THE FATHER. So he left home. Everyone agrees he was lost. But then... Jesus shifts the spotlight. The elder brother never left the house. He obeyed. He served. He worked. He looked like the perfect son. Yet when his brother returned... His heart was exposed. Sometimes... You can be close to God's house without being close to God's heart. Listen carefully to what the elder brother says. "THESE MANY YEARS I HAVE BEEN SERVING YOU... YET YOU NEVER GAVE ME A YOUNG GOAT..."(Luke 15:29) Notice his language. He didn't see himself as a son. He saw himself as a servant earning wages. That's religion. Religion says, "If I obey enough, God owes me." The gospel says, "Because Christ obeyed perfectly, I have already been accepted." One lives for approval. THE OTHER LIVES FROM APPROVAL. That's the difference. Then comes one of the saddest verses in the story. The father goes out... Not only for the younger son... But also for the elder son. "Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him."(Luke 15:28) The father pursued both. Grace runs toward rebels... and religious people. The younger brother thought, "I've sinned too much." The elder brother thought, "I've done enough." Both were wrong. One trusted his sin. The other trusted his works. NEITHER TRUSTED THE FATHER'S GRACE. Then the father says something astonishing. "Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours." (Luke 15:31) The elder brother had access to everything... YET HE LIVED LIKE HE HAD NOTHING. How many Christians are doing the same? Here's the twist almost everyone misses. The younger son entered the feast. The elder brother... Never does. Jesus intentionally leaves the story unfinished. Why? BECAUSE THE PHARISEES WERE THE ELDER BROTHER. AND JESUS WAS INVITNG THEM TO COME INSIDE. The greatest danger isn't always running away from God. Sometimes... It's standing in church every Sunday... Serving... Praying... Reading your Bible... Yet secretly believing God loves you because you've earned it. That's not Christianity. THAT'S PERFORMANCE.
