He's been open about a rough few years as a young man, drink and drugs and legal trouble, and about getting sober and putting everything into the work instead. He won a modelling competition on a TV show at 21, which is a strange way in, then got taken out of drama school early because he'd landed Band of Brothers. Then Bronson in 2009, where he gained about three stone and played a real prisoner so convincingly that the man himself approved. Then Inception, and that was the door. After that: The Dark Knight Rises as Bane, where he acted an entire film with his face covered and still dominated it. Warrior, Locke, which is just him in a car for ninety minutes and is extraordinary, The Drop, The Revenant, Mad Max Fury Road, Dunkirk, Venom. Plus Alfie Solomons in Peaky Blinders, Taboo, and MobLand. The style is proper London. Bomber jackets, flat caps, plain dark layers, boots, tracksuits he clearly actually wears.
