The sad part is he didn't have to stand alone. Those that stand next to you are a reflection of who you are. In his case his friend wasn't reflecting anything but humanity. He just needed to stand by his friend. He couldn't do that. So now he stands alone. Him standing alone is a reflection of his character. Which is beyond politics. Being there to witness that is nothing to brag about.
