I had the privilege to do my 26th marathon but this time was different - I walked the ENTIRE COURSE and it was different. Every year for the last few years, I've been slower in pace. Sometimes I hear some horrific feedback but I've have two years to reframe these comments. When we reached Harlem, a similar action to 2017 occurred to me and Darlene around mile 22 and 23. While I didn't want to say it to her, it shook me for a minute. A guy in a car said

Sometimes I hear some horrific feedback but I've have two years to reframe these comments. When we reached Harlem, a similar action to 2017 occurred to me and Darlene around mile 22 and 23. While I didn't want to say it to her, it shook me for a minute. A guy in a car said "You should quit." I was infuriated and to honest, I cursed him out but kept moving. And not even 15 minutes later, another person did it. What I learned from 2017 is to process, feel it and to examine. Why did I show up today? Did I show up for people who never considered me or may never do something where failure is a daunting possibility? Did I not receive love and support on the course? Did strangers not step in to become out lights out there? Did I not have fun? Or saw a ton of people from different run clubs, close friends - some of which were outside from 9am - (hey Spencer), friends showing up while jetlagged (hey @300poundsandrunning) or having a cyclist show up at a whole ass running event bearing everything from electrolytes, food, water and snacks and even went back to help others (The Brown Bike Girl)? Did I not come into a fully functioning party at the finish line? Did I not feel the love on the course? Those are OUR PEOPLE. When I didn't know what community I belonged to, I told myself to start from within and become the person I wanted to see. I am forever grateful for the opportunities presented to me and I humbly acknowledge that this is a privilege to run this course several times over. For my back of the pack runners that think they don't belong, you are seen and belong right here with everyone else. 📸 E.
