@drbeckyatgoodinside: On my @callherdaddy episode I talked about confidence and what actually builds it in kids... and I wanted to expand on one piece of that here, because I keep thinking about it, not just as a parent but as a woman. How many times in my own life did I feel like something was off, or too much, or not right for me, and then someone told me I was overreacting, and I believed them over myself. That voice doesn't go away when we grow up. It just gets quieter and harder to trust. "You're so dramatic." "You're fine." In the moment, it seems like a harmless comment. But comments like that teach kids that other people know their feelings better than they do. So when I catch myself saying "you're fine" or "you're so dramatic" to my own kid, I try to remember what's actually happening underneath. Underneath that moment, my kid is really asking one thing. Can I trust what I feel, or does someone else get to decide that for me. "You're fine" answers no. "Tell me more" answers yes. Where do you notice yourself doubting your own read on things, even now, as an adult? I'd love to hear in the comments.

My daughter says she’s not comfortable with a lot of things that she has to do such as going to the dentist, taking a shower, trying new foods. I say “you can feel uncomfortable and we have to…” any other advice?

Wouldn’t we want our sons AND daughters to learn this lesson?

So how do we over time teach appropriate responses? My kids are still little. My 4yo daughter when she's sad (doesn't like a boundary, gets hurt, feels lonely, etc.) will sometimes scream cry, like really loud, and for a very long time. I don't want to teach her to hide her feelings and obviously I understand that crying is an appropriate response, but scream crying loud enough to hear from outside our house or out in public doesn't feel like something I should be condoning. Should I teach her it's ok to cry but not so loudly or should I be allowing her to express herself? I'm not sure what to do here. Today, she skinned her knee in a parking lot and screamed while crying for probably 10 minutes while clutching me for comfort. Obviously, she was hurt but the screaming was very loud and prolonged. Is stuff like this normal?

Can you do more content on parenting as it relates to gender? I have a boy and a girl and I think I’m an ok parent but I want to make sure that I make sure how I parent them gives them to tools they need to survive the different pressures of a gendered environment as they get older. So for girls like yes, listening to their bodies, being self-advocates, etc. and for boys maybe things that teach them empathy, how it’s ok to be vulnerable, idk

I LOVE this, but how do you do this WHILE also working through the whining? It’s like we (as moms) are told to ignore the whining/meltdown or else we are rewarding it and reinforcing it, but then in the same breath we are being told to also lean into it. How do you navigate that?

I always taught my daughter to say “stop” “no” for things like tickling and being hugged.

Our three year old now tells us she needs quiet time. It’s so beautiful. She’s able to relay that she’s overstimulated and needs some time to decompress. Makes me happy

People dislike that my daughter tells people she doesn't want to give hugs, kisses, etc she also can tell me no and she doesn't get in trouble, i just "okay", and I always explain it in this way to them.
