The plot follows Cleopatra, a trapeze artist, who conspires with a strongman to murder Hans, a wealthy carnival performer with dwarfism, for his inheritance. Browning cast real-life carnival performers with physical disabilities, humanizing them while framing the "normal" actors as the true monsters. Upon release, its intense climax—where the performers exact brutal revenge—horrified audiences and critics.
