Saturday mornings in 1983 just hit different. You made it through another week of school, and Saturday morning was your reward. No alarm clock needed. You were up early, still in your pajamas, pouring a big bowl of cereal and getting comfortable in front of the TV. For a few hours, that television belonged to the kids. You flipped between ABC, CBS and NBC, catching cartoons like The Smurfs, Super Friends, Scooby-Doo, Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, The Flintstone Funnies, Pac-Man, Alvin and the Chipmunks and the brand-new Saturday morning phenomenon He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Some had been around for years, others were just beginning, and many would follow us well beyond 1983. And the commercials were almost as memorable as the cartoons. Cap'n Crunch, Frosted Flakes and Lucky Charms competed for your breakfast attention while commercials for Hot Wheels, Barbie, G.I. Joe, Atari games, Masters of the Universe toys and countless action figures had us already making mental Christmas lists. By the time the holidays got closer, every commercial break seemed to introduce another toy you just had to have. There was something special about being a kid on a Saturday morning back then. No streaming. No choosing any episode whenever you wanted. You had to be there when it came on, cereal bowl in hand, because once Saturday morning cartoons were over, it was time to go outside, ride your bike, hit the arcade, play with your toys or find out where everybody in the neighborhood was hanging out. Take it back to 1983, when Saturday morning wasn't just another morning. It was an event.
