@breakingnewsnow7: Scientists have formally identified a new species of living wild cat for the first time in more than a century. The tiny spotted feline, known locally as the Tilcayo, lives in the cloud-covered Yungas forests of Bolivia. Officially named Leopardus tilcayo, the wild cat measures about 18 inches long and weighs only around 3 pounds, making it smaller than the average house cat. Its light-brown coat is covered with dark, irregular rosette-like markings. The discovery has an incredible backstory. One of the cats was originally found as a kitten near a forest and mistaken for a domestic cat. After eventually arriving at a wildlife sanctuary, researchers noticed that its appearance didn’t quite match known tiger cats. Years of research and genetic testing ultimately confirmed that it represented an entirely separate species. DNA analysis indicates that the Tilcayo’s lineage separated from other tiger cats approximately 1.4 million years ago. Scientists currently have information from only two living individuals and a small number of camera-trap sightings, meaning much about the species remains a mystery.
