Aircraft Piston Engine Compression Check – A Critical Indicator of Engine Health A compression check is one of the most important maintenance procedures performed on a piston aircraft engine. It is not just about obtaining a pressure reading—it’s about assessing the overall condition of the engine’s cylinders, valves, piston rings, and sealing surfaces. Why is a compression check performed? * Detect internal engine wear before it becomes a safety issue. * Evaluate the condition of piston rings and cylinder walls. * Identify leaking intake or exhaust valves. * Support preventive maintenance and reduce the risk of in-flight engine problems. * Determine whether further inspection, such as a borescope examination, is required. How is it performed? 1. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature. 2. Remove all spark plugs. 3. Position the piston of the cylinder being tested at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke. 4. Connect a calibrated differential compression tester. 5. Apply regulated air pressure (typically 80 psi) and compare the cylinder pressure to the reference pressure (e.g., 78/80, 74/80). 6. Listen carefully for escaping air: * Exhaust pipe: Possible exhaust valve leakage. * Air intake: Possible intake valve leakage. * Oil filler or crankcase breather: Worn piston rings or cylinder wear. Important Notes * A low compression reading alone does not automatically mean the cylinder must be removed. * Always follow the aircraft or engine manufacturer’s maintenance manual and applicable service instructions. * Compression test results should be evaluated together with borescope findings, engine operating history, oil analysis, and maintenance records. * Consistent monitoring and trend analysis are more valuable than relying on a single test result.
