I once added a random watch to a corpse and later in the session added a keyhole with the ingrained numbers 22:22 and it took them an hour to figure out they needed to push in the watch

Sean | Pragmatic RPG DM/GM :
and if players know this then they feel like the DM is just being completely arbitrary and the puzzle is "what solution does the DM like" not "what solutions works". I'm not saying I haven't done this when the players have completely gone the wrong direction in the solution but this advice if implemented widely has a poor effect in the trust of the DM.

The DM screen is there to give the players the illusion that the DM is prepared. And to roll dice randomly to be scary.

I whole heartedly and honestly agree . I've been a forever dm for decades . I prepare maybe 12% for the entire campaign. Maybe its just experience, but outside of a short draft of a story im done . p.s. my players have a blast and dont seem to have noticed

to each their own however I personally disagree with this method I think at a minimum you should have a rough outline of how to solve a puzzle maybe you don't need the full solution but at least something that provides a direction so you can give clues or hints and apply a theme

When I first started dming I planned everything, spent hours coming up with the plot and story for my first campaign, just for it to be completely derailed after 3 sessions. From then I have learned, they can’t derail the campaign if you don’t plan anything.

We got the classic “one of us lies, one of us tells the truth, figure out which door to go through” but none of us could remember how to solve it so we asked “of the three thresholds (which includes our still accessible entrance to the puzzle), which of them do not directly lead to our goal.” The lier points to the door we want, the truth points to 1 door + our entrance.

This is the way. My table took an hour to solve this puzzle. “You enter a room with a locked metal door on the other side. Scattered around the room are various bones. There is nothing else here.” And the clue for their investigation check was “looks like the door needs a Skeleton Key. Still took an hour before they gathered the bones together 🤦♂️

I agree. The only time I made complete puzzles with a set solution I had to GIVE IT TO THEM 😭😭 They couldn't find it on their own!!

I literally just present them with, what looks/sounds like a puzzle, and wait. I have no solution whatsoever. I just wait for them to do something that would be hilarious/they think is clever OR something that actually is rather clever and inspired.
I think of the puzzle and the reward, that's all.

usually I'll have like one obvious answer in case they get stuck and unless it's something I am specific on, (like a door combination I gave the code of several rooms ago) then it'll be very loose ended
