The Node.js event loop, explained in 9 seconds. Node runs all your JavaScript on ONE thread. It stays fast by never holding a task for long: callbacks flow through the event loop, run on the call stack, and libuv handles timers and I/O in the background. The trap: one heavy CPU task (like JSON.parse on an 80MB payload) runs on the call stack and freezes everything. The event loop can't pull the next callback, the queue piles up, and every other request stalls. Response time goes from 8ms to 9,400ms. The fix: move CPU-bound work to a worker thread (worker_threads). The main thread frees up, the queue drains, and the worker hands its result back as a callback. Rule of thumb: the event loop is 1 thread, so never block it. Save this for your next Node.js interview. Send it to the dev whose API "randomly" freezes under load. #nodejs #systemdesign #backend #javascript #softwareengineering
