@thephysiofix: Two years ago, I was standing beside my husband’s hospital bed wondering if our 10-month-old daughter would ever get her dad back after his massive stroke. Today, I watch him carry our daughter in one arm and our son in the other. ❤️‍🩹 There is so much that happened between those two moments. Thousands of hours of work. Incredible therapists and medical professionals. Research. Creativity. Frustration. Tiny wins that felt HUGE. Setbacks. Strength training. Tears. A whole lot of stubbornness. And two people who refused to decide what Logan’s future would look like before he had the opportunity to show us himself. I had been a physical therapist for nearly a decade when Logan had his stroke, but neurological rehabilitation was never my specialty. Suddenly, it became incredibly personal. I learned from people who knew more than I did. I found clinicians who could give Logan what I couldn’t. And then I brought what I did know to the table…movement, mobility, strength, conditioning and the ability to get really creative when the person I loved needed it most. And boy, did he progress. Walking was incredible. Driving was incredible. Going back to work was incredible. Pull-ups, pushups, jumping, throwing a ball, traveling again and deadlifting 300+ pounds are all incredible. But none of them compare to watching him be a dad. Because rehabilitation was never really about getting better at exercises. It was about getting his life back. And somehow, while we were fighting so hard for the life we already had, our family grew. Now I get to watch Logan hold a son who didn’t even exist when I was standing beside that hospital bed wondering whether my husband would survive. I will never pretend I’m grateful that this happened to him. But I am incredibly grateful for what we have chosen to do with it. It changed both of us. It changed our family. It changed me as a physical therapist. And now the lessons we learned fighting for Logan’s life get to help us fight for other people’s lives, too. When nothing is certain, anything is possible.
