I was in attendance at the Workshop for Traditional Rulers in Ondo State, organised by the Ondo State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. The workshop, themed “Repositioning the Traditional Institution for Harmonious Communal Relationship, Security, Cultural Preservation and Sustainable Development,” provided an important platform for meaningful discussions on the role of the traditional institution in the peace, security, cultural preservation and sustainable development of our communities. I believe there is a need for both the Federal and State Governments to organise more of these engagements regularly. The traditional institution remains closest to the people at the grassroots, and many of the challenges affecting our communities can be better understood and addressed when traditional rulers are given the opportunity to engage directly with government, share experiences and contribute to policy discussions. Issues affecting the traditional sector itself also require continuous attention, dialogue and reform. Strengthening the institution will ultimately strengthen our communities, because a well supported traditional institution can play a greater role in peace building, security, cultural preservation, community development and social cohesion. I commend the Ondo State Government for creating this platform and look forward to seeing more engagements of this nature across the State and the country.
