@obinn88: More than 100,000 people in Japan are now aged 100 or older, a milestone the country has never recorded before. Health Ministry figures released ahead of Respect for the Aged Day show 107,677 centenarians as of September 1. The total has increased for 56 consecutive years since comparable statistics began in 1963. Women account for the vast majority, with 94,298 centenarians, or 87.6% of the total. Japan has 13,379 men aged 100 or older. The country’s oldest woman is Fuyo Kishimoto of Kyoto City, who was born on December 20, 1911 and is now 114. The oldest man, Hikaru Kato of Kumamoto City, is 112. Shimane Prefecture recorded the highest concentration for the 14th straight year, with 186.65 centenarians per 100,000 residents. Kochi and Tottori followed. As more Japanese residents reach 100, how should communities adapt to support people living longer lives?
