I love open discussions so I thought this would be a cool topic to try! . Before I met my husband he had just transitioned his 2 cats Fred and George to indoor/outdoor cats, due to them scratching up carpets, couches & using the bathroom everywhere. This was suggested to him by a woman living down the road from us that works with rescue/rehab for cats. When I moved in I immediately thought them being outside was terrifying, thinking of them running away, or literally just anything going wrong. I thought it was cruel and they deserved to be inside, napping on the couch and in the air conditioning. I started making them come inside but they would meow by the door all day until I would let them out. They made it very clear they wanted outside. I started letting them outside when I was home but watching and checking on them through out the day. Over time I realized how full of life they were being outside, climbing palm trees, chasing lizards & sunbathing on cars. (Even coming home with the occasional bird☠️🤢) They wouldn’t leave the general area of our house unless visiting neighbors often for treats. Witnessing how happy they were outside honestly changed my opinion on the whole situation. They were so active and getting to use all their natural instincts outside. They would come inside when they wanted cuddles or air conditioned naps through the day but they were always their happiest outside! Unfortunately our new house is close to a busy road so the catio garden is our next project! Of course every house location & cat is different so I would never advocate to let your cats outside in a location they could be harmed! But seeing our cats thrive outside completely changed my opinion on it!
