John Paul is 9 years old and has been selling coconuts to island-hopping tourists to help his parents earn extra income. He paddles around on a makeshift boat his father built from Styrofoam and wood, tied together with rope. John Paul gets the coconuts himself from the trees, although his father sometimes does it for him. They use a straw made from a type of bamboo, which they smoothen out so it can be reused multiple times. The encounter happened during an island-hopping trip arranged through Yunara Resort Busuanga, a newly rebranded hotel in this part of Palawan, after stops for snorkeling and dugong watching. The ₱50 price also stands out against a viral video from Balicasag Island in Bohol, where a tourist posted that a fresh buko was being sold for ₱200 apiece.
