Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) touted the work of House Republicans during the 119th Congress as lawmakers left Washington for an extended recess ahead of the November midterms, calling it "one of the most productive" Congresses in history. "House Republicans are going now back to our districts. We're going to make the case to the American people on what we have delivered on their behalf," he told reporters Wednesday evening. "The media certainly doesn't do this for us, so we've got to go tell them the truth." The speaker highlighted Republicans' "big, beautiful" tax cuts bill as well as the creation of Trump Accounts, which are designed to help kids save and invest money for their future. He also spoke about measures he said have created jobs, promoted safety and order in cities, and secured the southern border. "That is Republicans' proven agenda of results, and there's so much more," he said. "And by the way, every Democrat voted against everything I just recounted for you." He called this Congress "one of the most productive in history," noting that the House passed more than 900 bills, despite the vast majority languishing in the Senate. "If they will process those bills and send them over, the House can do meaningful work," he said. "In the meantime, it feels very much like we're spinning our wheels. Our incumbents here, who are now candidates, need to be in their districts working with their constituents right now." The House was originally scheduled to be in session through Oct. 1, but the speaker cut two weeks from the calendar to give Republicans more time to campaign in their districts ahead of the midterms. On Wednesday, he shortened the calendar by another day, scrapping a planned legislative day for Thursday. That move allowed Republicans to avoid a politically fraught vote on Rep. Thomas Massie's (R-KY) resolution to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. #mikejohnson #congress #houseofrepresentatives #cspan
