UNDERSTANDING OLÓDÙMARÈ, ÒRÚNMÌLÀ AND IFÁ For someone who is just beginning to learn about Yorùbá spirituality, three names can sometimes be confusing: Olódùmarè, Òrúnmìlà and Ifá. They are connected, but they are not the same thing. 1. OLÓDÙMARÈ — THE SUPREME SOURCE Olódùmarè is understood as the Supreme Being, the source and creator of existence. Everything that exists ultimately comes from Olódùmarè. Olódùmarè is not simply another Òrìṣà among many. In Yorùbá understanding, Olódùmarè is above all Òrìṣà. 2. ÒRÚNMÌLÀ — THE WITNESS TO DESTINY Òrúnmìlà is the Òrìṣà associated with wisdom, destiny and the knowledge of human existence. He is traditionally described as Ẹlẹ́rìí Ìpín — the Witness of Destiny, because of his intimate knowledge of the journey of human beings and their destiny. Òrúnmìlà is therefore not the same as Olódùmarè. Olódùmarè is the Supreme Being; Òrúnmìlà is the Òrìṣà through whom the wisdom of Ifá is traditionally accessed and understood. 3. IFÁ — THE SYSTEM OF WISDOM Ifá is not simply the name of another god. Ifá refers to the sacred body of knowledge, wisdom, verses, teachings and divination tradition through which matters concerning destiny, character, life circumstances and appropriate action are interpreted. The Odù Ifá contain thousands of traditional verses and teachings. Through divination, a Babaláwo or Ìyáláwo identifies the relevant Odù and interprets its message for the person seeking guidance. So, in simple terms: Olódùmarè = Supreme Source Òrúnmìlà = Òrìṣà of wisdom and witness of destiny Ifá = Sacred system of wisdom, divination and teachings associated with Òrúnmìlà Think of it this way: Olódùmarè is the Supreme Source. Òrúnmìlà is the Witness of Destiny. Ifá is the sacred wisdom through which destiny and life's questions are examined. Understanding this difference is important because saying “Olódùmarè, Òrúnmìlà and Ifá are all the same” removes important distinctions within Yorùbá traditional thought. #Ifa #spirituality #babalawo #fyp #spiritualgrowth
