@silvcassini: Swahili is unmistakably African, but centuries of trade across the Indian Ocean left traces of Arabic in its vocabulary. Words such as kitabu, habari and saa tell the story of merchants, migration, religion and cultural exchange along the East African coast. The fascinating part is that once those words entered Swahili, they began following Bantu grammar, which is why kitabu becomes vitabu. Language doesn’t just describe history; sometimes it preserves it. #silviacassini #worththesearch #goviral #swahililanguage

70% Bantu, 20% Arabic & Hindi while 10% is a mix of Portuguese, German, Turkish and English. That's how I was taught in class tho! Turkish the only word I know is "Kasha" I don't remember how it's written in Turkish, other like German for "shule" also I don't remember in German but are the ones who introduced school, Portuguese for "Leso & meza" and English is for "skuli" as school for Hindi first snacks (sambusa, kabab, chapati, kachori, biriani) other words like Duka, lakini & dunia.

Swahili has Arabic words, yes...but most of its words come from Bantus. If you speak Swahili you can learn almost all Eastern Bantus language like Giriama, Kamba, Taita, and Mijikenda on a whim, but the same can't be said for Arabic. This is more two say Swahili is more of an amalgamation between these communities than borrowing from the Arabs. And most of the borrowed words are of things that didn't exist in local communities.

swahili isn't a bantu language, swahili is a coastal language which was used by traders along the coastal towns and it is a mixture of Arabic and East African languages

We were not called swahilis our name was "Ngozi" people, most of the swahili words are also 80% mijikenda. If you listen to the Giriama language most words in the language are swahili, i would say Arabic words account for 10%...Also we have different dialects of swahili, if you live in Mombasa we speak different swahili from Malindi and Lamu people, Lamu swahilis speak an older version it. I live in Mombasa and i always find it difficult understanding swahili from Lamu😂
